Tracking and monitoring Sanitation operations aids in departmental resource planning for providing efficient, effective and innovative services for St. Petersburg.
The Sanitation Department services over 77,000 private household accounts. We use one-man fully automated trucks to pick up the provided alley or curbside containers. The city is divided into 31 residential routes that are serviced by the Department.

In addition to the private household accounts the Sanitation Department services over 5,900 commercial accounts. Commercial accounts include businesses, apartment complexes, condos & schools. We offer various sizes and types of commercial containers to meet the different needs of each business.

The City of St. Petersburg launched its first residential composting program on July 15, 2019. Residents in single-family homes are invited to sign up for the free program and minimize their environmental impact by turning kitchen and yard waste into usable, nutrient-rich fertilizer. To date there have been 6,074 compost bins requested. 933 of those requests were duplicates or requests from non single family homes or homes outside the city limits. The Sanitation Department has delivered 3,620 bins and is in the process of arranging delivery of the remaining 1,521 bins.
Since late June 2015, St. Petersburg residents have successfully reduced the amount of trash sent to the landfill by participating in the city’s recycling program. Residents not only played a major role in helping the city achieve a much-lower-than-expected contamination rate, they also helped Pinellas County achieve the highest rate of recycling statewide.

The City of St. Petersburg's Graffiti Removal Program was started in 1995. The city, in partnership with City Codes Enforcement and the St. Petersburg Police Department, is committed to effectively preventing and removing graffiti and together strives to maintain a clean, safe, and graffiti-free city. The goal is to respond within 48 hours of notification since a swift response/removal discourages repeat incidents. The City photographs and documents all cases in a database which is shared with the SPPD for arrest or/and restitution action.

The City of St. Petersburg's Sanitation Department assists residents and business owners in controlling rats on the outside of their property and in the surrounding neighborhood. The City will send out a Rodent Control Technician to inspect properties, place a tamper-resistant bait station in a rodent-attracting location outdoors and advise on how to help rat prevention.

Sanitation inspectors respond to inquiries and requests for services that come from Utility accounts (requests to start or stop services), SeeClickFix, and direct phone calls to Sanitation regarding a wide range of customer concerns. As time permits, our inspectors also survey their territories to locate issues that have not yet been reported.
Compressed Natural Gas Initiative
The Sanitation Department began testing CNG powered collection vehicles in late 2012. The tests proved that the new CNG powered engines could successfully power the City's solid waste collection fleet. Benefits of switching to CNG powered vehicles from diesel were noted in reduced emissions and the reduced cost of fuel. An 80% reduction in CO (carbon monoxide), a 90% reduction in NOX (nitrogen oxide), an 80% reduction in VOC/NMHC (volatile organic compounds and and nonmethane hydrocarbons), and a 100% reduction in VHC (volatile hydrocarbons). Fuel cost savings increased as we added more and more CNG trucks to the fleet.
In 2016 a temporary CNG fueling station was constructed at the Sanitation complex and made permanent in 2018. By the end of the 2019 fiscal year, the Sanitation Department will have 60 CNG powered collection vehicles.
The Sanitation Department had 108 diesel powered collection vehicles that could be powered by compressed natural gas. As these diesel vehicles are retired, we have been replacing them with clean burning, natural gas-powered units. So far we have replaced 60 with 48 to go.
Since the inception of the program in 2012, the City has saved $2,126,313 and realized a reduction of 3,863 tons of CO2.
The City has received Federal and State grants to help fund the conversion of our fleet from diesel to clean burning compressed natural gas (CNG):
